Revisited: Apocalypse the Twelve

I enjoy going back and reading older comics that ran before I ever got into comics. Considering I’ve only begun keeping up with comics in the past two or three years, I have a ton of material to work from. In these Revisited features, I’m planning on simply jotting down a few thoughts on each story as I read it. I unofficially began this feature last week with my thoughts on Age of Apocalypse, so this week, I’m taking a look at another Apocalypse book: Apocalypse the Twelve.

Some thoughts on Age of Apocalypse

It has been about fifteen years since the Age of Apocalypse crossover event occurred in the Marvel universe. Sadly, I’m only just getting around to reading this monumental tale. It was quite enjoyable to see many of my favorite mutants (and other Marvel characters) follow a path without Charles Xavier’s direction. It was also neat to see characters like Dark Beast and Blink from this reality, after having read about these characters in more recent X books. After the read-through, I wanted to lay out a few thoughts that occurred to me while reading these books.

X-Men Forever 23 Review

The Good

This book is the culmination of what Claremont has been building towards since Forever began. The X-Men have finally reached the Consortium’s space satellite and are now fighting to prevent the eradication of mutants.

A Potentially Astonishing Mess

Astonishing X-Men 1 Review.

The Good

-I must admit, I’ve never heard of Kaare Andrews. While reading this issue, I found myself having some of the same thoughts about the art that I did while reading through Morrison’s New X-Men run. Initially, I wasn’t a fan of Quitely’s art either. I could see some of Andrews’ art growing on me as I see more, but not without some changes (mentioned below).

Uncanny X-Men 524 Review

I’ve had high hopes for Second Coming from the get go. If these last two issues are any indication of what’s left to come then this will easily become one of my favorite stories in all of comics. This issue wasn’t action heavy, but then again, it really didn’t need to be.

An X-Man Shall Fall

A new preview image for an upcoming X-Force issue shows a rather ominous message. One of the portrayed X-Men will die in the upcoming issue, a part of Second Coming. Here are some of my thoughts about the potentially doomed mutants.

Better Late Than Never – Dark Phoenix Saga

Despite being a huge X-Men fan, I’ll admit, I haven’t read too many of the X-Men books (or any comics for that matter) from before 2000. I did read some of Claremont’s later stuff from the re-launch of the X-Men title from 1991, but that’s about it. Lately though, I’ve felt that I’ve missed a lot of some of the truly great and classic stories from X-Men’s history and I’ve learned that Claremont was instrumental in some of those stories. However, the single story that was consistently praised and the top of many “Best X-Men stories” lists was the Dark Phoenix Saga. I figured this was the best entrance to my reading of some the greatest X-Men stories that have been written.

Big Changes Coming to X-Men?

As I first read on io9.com, it seems some changes may be hitting the X books this summer. This may be nothing more than a teaser poster for the Second Coming event. It seems a little strange that they’d put out a poster as ambiguous as this for an event they’ve been pushing other previews for over the past few months.

The Only Hope

In the coming months, the Second Coming event will begin in the Marvel Universe. This will be the conclusion to the Messiah stories that started in 2007 with Messiah Complex and continued last summer in the X-Force/Cable crossover, Messiah War. Second Coming will see Hope return to the present along with Cable. This will hopefully prove to be a huge payoff for the X fans that have followed this story over the past few years. I only hope (pun!) a few possible paths for this story to play out are avoided.
